How Does Invisalign Straighten Teeth? Customized Clear Aligners Make It Possible

First, you will come to our Albuquerque office for an Invisalign consultation. Next, Dr. Kelly will create a customized Invisalign treatment plan to achieve your best smile.

Making Your Clear Aligners

Your Invisalign aligners are custom-made from impressions that we take of your teeth. Your clear aligners will be fabricated to help you achieve your aesthetic goals. Approximately every two weeks, you will change out the current aligners for the next set in the series.

Achieving Beautiful Progress

Over time, your teeth will gradually shift into their desired locations, guided by each successive aligner. While traditional braces must be regularly tightened, this treatment simply involves using a new, slightly different aligner to steer treatment.

We Provide Quality Dental Care And Excellent Patient Experiences

"Everything about my visit was top-notch, excellent!"

Is Invisalign Right for Me?

Like traditional metal braces, Invisalign can correct a variety of mild to moderate orthodontic issues. However, some patients may be better suited for a more traditional approach. Dr. Tim Kelly will take the time needed to determine which approach is best for your needs.

Am I a Good Candidate for Invisalign? Qualifying for Invisalign Aligners

Most patients who are interested in Invisalign treatment will likely qualify for the procedure. Scheduling a consultation with Dr. Kelly is the best way to determine your candidacy.

During this consultation, Dr. Kelly will assess your:

Oral Health

You must be in good oral health before you can be considered eligible for this orthodontic treatment. Tooth decay and gum disease will need to be corrected first. These conditions would only worsen while wearing your clear aligners, and will compromise your results.

Misalignment Severity

While Invisalign is great for straightening mild to moderate misalignment, patients who have severe malocclusion may have to use traditional wire braces before they can qualify for Invisalign. You can switch from metal braces to Invisalign after a certain degree of correction is achieved.

Commitment To Treatment

An important factor in your candidacy is whether you're committed to the process. Patients will have to wear their clear aligners daily and attend scheduled follow-ups. The aligners are removed only when you eat, sleep, and clean your teeth.

Invisalign Treatment Process

To find out if you qualify for Invisalign, you must first have a consultation with your dentist. Dr. Kelly will assess your teeth, gums, and jaw joints to determine if the Invisalign system is right for you. Next, we will design a custom treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Most patients finish treatment in about 12 to 18 months.
Most patients finish treatment in about 12 to 18 months.

Digital Impressions

The first step is taking digital impressions of your teeth. To do this, we will use a handheld wand to capture images of your bite. These image files are then uploaded to a computer and sent to our trusted dental lab.

Fabrication of Clear Aligners

A dental technician will use the digital impression files to create your aligners. The number of aligners you receive will depend on your unique case. Each set of trays will move your teeth a little closer to their proper positions.

Try-On Appointment

Once your clear aligners are shipped back to our Albuquerque, NM, office, we will schedule you for a fitting. Your orthodontist will ensure a proper fit and will demonstrate how to place, remove, and care for your aligners.

Active Treatment

For treatment to be fully effective, you'll need to wear your aligners for at least 22 hours every day. They should only be removed to clean your teeth, eat, or drink. Overall treatment time varies for each patient, but most finish treatment in about 12 to 18 months.

What Is the Cost Of Invisalign?

The average cost of Invisalign is $4,500-$5,600. The cost of your treatment depends on several factors:

  • The complexity of your treatment
  • The length of your treatment
  • The number of clear aligners needed to achieve your results
  • The number of replacement aligners you need due to damaged or misplaced trays

During your consultation, Dr. Kelly will review your customized treatment plan and discuss your cost. Contact our Albuquerque office today to get started.

How To Care for Your Aligners and Your Teeth During Invisalign Treatment

During Invisalign treatment, you should:

Brush and Floss Daily

Brushing twice daily and flossing once daily will help prevent a buildup of plaque and bacteria that can lead to cavities, gum disease, and tooth decay.

Clean Your Aligners

Clean your aligners at least once a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and clear, gentle soap. Avoid using toothpaste, as it can discolor your clear trays.

Remove While Eating

One of the benefits of this orthodontic treatment is that the trays are removable. You should remove them every time you are eating or drinking anything besides water to keep food and sugar particles off the trays.

Avoid Hard Bristles

When brushing your aligners, avoid using a hard-bristled toothbrush. These can scratch your aligners and make them more visible.

Avoid Hot Water

Do not use hot water while rinsing and cleaning your aligners. Because your aligners are made of plastic, extremely hot temperatures can warp them and affect your treatment timeline.

Keep Aligners Safe

Put your aligners in their case whenever you remove them. Clear aligners can be easily misplaced or damaged. All of which will increase the time and cost of your treatment.

Maintaining Your Smile After Invisalign

Once your teeth have been straightened, you'll want to maintain your results. Here are some recommendations from our Albuquerque, NM, team to ensure that your beautiful new smile lasts:

Wear a Retainer

Retainer

Whether you use braces or Invisalign to straighten your teeth, you must wear a retainer to keep your teeth from shifting back into their previous positions. During the first few months, you'll need to wear your retainer for about 22 hours a day. Eventually, however, you'll be able to scale back to nighttime wear only.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Toothbrush with toothpaste

Keep your straight smile healthy by brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily. Be sure you always use a soft toothbrush and a nonabrasive, ADA-approved fluoride toothpaste. Practicing good oral hygiene reduces cavity-causing plaque, keeping your teeth healthy between cleanings.

Visit Your Dentist

Dr. Tim Kelly and Patient

Your orthodontist will want to see you post-treatment to make sure your oral health is on track. You'll also want to be sure you attend routine dental exams and cleanings. These appointments give our team the chance to assess your oral health and detect any problems early on, while they're easier to treat.

Life After Invisalign Treatment

After Invisalign treatment with Dr. Kelly, patients can enjoy:

Improved Oral Health

Invisalign promotes healthy teeth and gums. Straighter teeth make it easier to clean areas that were previously hard to reach due to overcrowded and misaligned teeth. You will be better able to prevent cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease following Invisalign treatment.

Enhanced Oral Function

Invisalign can also improve the function of your bite by putting your teeth into proper alignment. You will be able to speak and chew comfortably after this orthodontic care.

Boosted Confidence

Invisalign can create a smile that is both healthy and beautiful. Many patients experience a significant boost in confidence following treatment because they love the look of their new smile.
Contact our Albuquerque practice to take the first step towards better confidence and oral health.

You Don't Need To See An Orthodontist For Your Invisalign Care

One of the benefits of choosing Dr. Kelly for your Invisalign treatment is that you can experience the effects of orthodontics without having to go to a specialist. Dr. Kelly can create your treatment plan and guide you every step of the way towards your new, beautiful smile. Contact our Albuquerque practice today to request your Invisalign consultation.
