How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign aligners are custom-made from impressions that we take of your teeth. Approximately every two weeks, you will change out the current aligners for the next set in the sequence. Over time, your teeth will gradually shift into their desired locations.

Unlike braces, which require wire, bands, and brackets to move the teeth, Invisalign gently shifts the teeth using invisible trays.

Is Invisalign Right for Me?

Like traditional metal braces, Invisalign can correct a variety of mild to moderate orthodontic issues. However, some patients may be better suited for a more traditional approach. Dr. Tim Kelly adheres to biological orthodontics, taking health and function as well as aesthetics into consideration.

What should I expect during orthodontic treatment with Invisalign?

Invisalign Treatment Process

To find out if you qualify for Invisalign, you must first have a consultation with your orthodontist. Dr. Kelly will assess your teeth, gums, and jaw joints to determine if the Invisalign system is right for you. Next, we will design a custom treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Day of Procedure

Digital Impressions

The first step is taking digital impressions of your teeth. To do this, we will use a handheld wand to capture images of your bite. These image files are then uploaded to a computer and sent to our trusted dental lab.

Fabrication of Clear Aligners

A dental technician will use the digital impression files to create your aligners. The number of aligners you receive will depend on your unique case. Each set of trays will move your teeth a little closer to their desired positions.

Try-On Appointment

Once your clear aligners are shipped back to our Albuquerque, NM, office, we will schedule you for a fitting. Your orthodontist will ensure a proper fit and will demonstrate how to place, remove, and care for your aligners.

Active Treatment

For treatment to be fully effective, you'll need to wear your aligners for at least 22 hours every day. They should only be removed to clean your teeth, eat, or drink. Overall treatment time varies for each patient, but most finish treatment in about 12 to 18 months.

Maintaining Your Smile after Invisalign

Once your teeth have been straightened, you'll want to maintain your results. Here are some recommendations from our Albuquerque, NM, team to ensure that your beautiful new smile lasts for the long haul.

Wear a Retainer

Whether you use braces or Invisalign to straighten your teeth, you must wear a retainer to keep your teeth from shifting back into their old positions. During the first few weeks, you'll need to wear your retainer for about 22 hours a day. Eventually, however, you'll be able to reduce to nighttime wear only.

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Keep your straight smile healthy by brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily. Be sure you always use a soft toothbrush and a nonabrasive, fluoride, ADA-approved toothpaste. Practicing good oral hygiene reduces cavity-causing plaque, keeping your teeth healthy between cleanings.

Visit Your Dentist

Your orthodontist may want to see you post-treatment to make sure your oral health is on track. You'll also want to be sure you attend routine dental exams and cleanings. These appointments give our team the chance to assess your oral health and detect any problems early on, while they're easier to treat.

I've heard of aligner attachments. What are they and what do they do?

Invisalign
SmartForce® Attachments

Aligner attachments help orthodontists make complex tooth movements without braces. They're small enough to be virtually invisible, and they apply the right amount of force to achieve the desired results. These tooth-colored attachments are applied to the teeth, allowing the aligners to apply gentle force when in place. While not every patient who opts for Invisalign will require aligner attachments, they are incredibly beneficial for those who need them. During a consultation at our practice, our dental team will let you know if aligner attachments will be part of your treatment plan.
