Porcelain veneers are a fast and effective way to achieve a dazzling, symmetrical smile. Some dental imperfections, such as a slight misalignment or a small chip or crack, do not compromise oral health and are not serious enough to warrant more intensive treatments such as orthodontics. Nonetheless, they can cause feelings of self-consciousness, making you feel reluctant to smile. Porcelain veneers provide excellent benefits for anyone whose healthy smile is held back by minor cosmetic issues. These thin porcelain shells are custom-crafted to fit onto the front surfaces of the teeth, concealing any imperfections and creating a beautiful overall aesthetic enhancement. In as little as two visits to our office, we can transform your smile, helping you look - and feel - your very best. In some cases, a veneer can be used to make a slight adjustment to your bite in order to help you overcome TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder.
Those who could benefit from porcelain veneer include virtually anyone whose healthy smile has instances of:
In some cases, patients suffering with TMJ disorder may need only a very slight adjustment in one area of the front, or most visible part, of their bite. For some patients, the placement of a porcelain veneer can achieve the adjustment needed to provide relief. It may also be used in conjunction with other restorations such as crowns and dental implants to achieve a properly balanced bite.
Placing porcelain veneers requires two visits to our office over the course of two to three weeks. During your first visit, the tooth you wish to treat will be prepared, which involves removing a portion of the enamel from the front surface equal to the thickness of an egg shell. Next, an impression of the prepared tooth is taken and sent to an offsite laboratory where technicians will create your custom veneer. The color of porcelain will be chosen according to your natural tooth color, and the veneer will be crafted to achieve a natural-looking appearance among your surrounding teeth.
During your second visit to our office, Dr. Kelly will permanently bond the veneer to your tooth. Finally, you can leave with a brilliant new smile that looks completely natural.
Porcelain veneers can be combined with one or more treatments to achieve an even greater aesthetic enhancement. Most commonly, patients will undergo teeth whitening before having veneers placed and then have them colored to match their newly whitened teeth. This combination not only provides improved symmetry, but also a brighter smile.
