Invisalign is a brand name for Clear Aligners therapy. It is so fun and exciting because now patients can align their teeth, and we can very predictably design their treatment to get the teeth to all fit together and appear like they should on the computer.
The way Invisalign works is we have individual trays, or aligners, that are clear, and you wear them just like old retainers that you might be familiar with. Patients can hardly tell you even have them on. You talk pretty normally with them. You'd wear them 22 hours a day because you take them off to eat. You change to a new tray every week or two weeks depending on the situation. Over a period of time, patients can slowly align their teeth. They see it happening right in front of their eyes, and it's not uncomfortable.
Some people are familiar with traditional braces where you had metal braces and wires on your teeth. Those could be uncomfortable at times because the forces are different. With Invisalign, it's very predictable. The forces are low, so you don't even feel discomfort, and the teeth align; it's almost magical. Then, when you're all done, we retain the position of the teeth, and you're done.
