A veneer is a porcelain product that covers just the front part of the tooth—the part you see. It's similar to brick veneer on a building, where only the front facade is covered in brick, not the entire building. We use veneers when the tooth structure behind the veneer is healthy and doesn't need alteration. If the tooth structure between the teeth is also healthy, and there isn't a big filling, a veneer can be used to improve the tooth's appearance without significantly removing tooth structure. Veneers can disguise the tooth's position, color, or anatomy while being conservative. Good candidates for veneers are patients with good oral health, relatively aligned teeth, and those looking to make cosmetic changes. Veneers can make a significant difference in the appearance of teeth while being more conservative. Like any dental treatment, there are variables involved. However, if the case is planned correctly, the procedures are done accurately, and the patient follows up with required cleanings, veneers can last a long time. I've seen veneers that are 15 to 20 years old and still perform well.
