What the sedation drugs do is they relax the patient enough that it relieves their anxiety of going to the dentist. It's very safe. We monitor patients while they're under sedation. It allows patients that have such a high anxiety level that they couldn't imagine doing dentistry without it, it allows them to come in in a very relaxed fashion. We do the dentistry they need. They are very comfortable during the procedure and after the procedure, and the fun thing is the drugs tend to have an amnesiac effect, so the patients don't even remember the procedure. Sedation is for the patient that thinks dentistry is something that is uncomfortable or something undesirable. We're able to eliminate their fears and get the dentistry they need done in a very comfortable fashion. We use different levels of sedation. Some patients don't really need an oral pill to be sedated. We use nitrous oxide which patients know as laughing gas. Sometimes we use that just to get over the edge of getting anesthetic to get the tooth numb, and then we take the gas off. They might even want to use that when they get their teeth cleaned, just anything that relieves the anxiety of coming in. Most patients, once they come in and they've been treated a few times and they see what the process is like here at out office, they are more comfortable and then they don't really need sedation any longer.
